Kinshasa Urban Transport Plan
Kinshasa, DR Congo
The Urban Transport Plan of Kinshasa, DR Congo’s capital and African third megapolis of 12 million people, has crossed the current challenges of Africa’s urbanization : informal and sprawled urban development, predominant informal economy, lack of infrastructure and transport services. The Plan has defined several orientations in order to create a realistic and affordable transport system for an African mega-city. The BRT network KinRapid combined with the restoration of two existing railway lines has been completed with multimodal stations combined with food markets and an improved accessibility by foot in a radius of 1 km. The short-term planned BRT system is implemented in priority on the existing new roads rebuilt since the years 2010. In a long term perspective, the BRT will act as a lever for a polycentric development of the Congolese mega-city.
